Thu, 02 Feb 2012 01:44:45 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.1.3 Beginning Math Skills http://www.teachingtwo.com/2010/04/30/beginning-math-skills/ http://www.teachingtwo.com/2010/04/30/beginning-math-skills/#comments Fri, 30 Apr 2010 18:33:30 +0000 Anne math skills beginning noticed memory perfect board playing http://www.teachingtwo.com/2010/04/30/beginning-math-skills/ Today while Emily and I were playing memory (Hello Kitty Flip ‘n’ Match), I noticed that the board it came with would be perfect for some beginning math skills.  I went and got some marbles and a die to roll.  I had her roll the dice and then add that many marbles.  We took turns rolling the die and adding more until the board was filled up.  The whole time I threw in some math terms and asked her questions.

  • How many do we have altogether?
  • What do you have to roll to fill up the row?
  • How many more do you need to fill the board up?
  • You rolled a 5 first and now a 3.  What is 5 plus 3 more?

These kinds of questions are ones that kids encounter in word problems.  When I taught first grade many kids had a hard time figuring out how to answer those problems.  So whenever I can I ask my girls so they will understand what they mean as they get older.

Then Ashlyn wanted to play hide and go seek.  She always wants to play.  I don’t know why but I hate that game.  Thankfully, my husband agreed to play with her.  So I stayed busy playing working on the computer while he and the girls played.  I heard them laughing and Ashlyn saying,”DADDY!” so I wanted to see what was going on.  This is what I saw!

Using a hundreds chart is a great activity to teach kids the different number patterns. It can also help in learning to count by 2′s, 5′s, and 10′s. Here is how you play.

  • Print out the hundred board or the twenty board depending on the age and level of the child.
  • Decide what you are going to have the child use to mark the number on the board. I’ve used M&M’s, raisins, Cherios, etc. Using something edible is more fun.
  • Write different numbers on index cards and show them to the child one at a time. Have them say the number and then find it on the board. When they find it they can place a “marker” on that number.
  • Repeat this as many times as you want. As the child continues to locate the numbers on the chart, they should begin to notice different patterns in how the chart is set up. ex. In this row all the numbers start with the number 4, or in this column all the numbers end in 7, and so on.
  • When you have finished, have the child pick up one marker at a time and say the number again before he eats it.

  • Boggle Junior- This can be for many different ages.  My 4 year old and 22 month old play. 
  • Cards- Card games are a great way to learn about numbers. 
  • Yahtzee- I play this with my 4 yr. old and we only try to get the top part of the Yahtzee card.  Playing with dice is great for kids to learn about seeing groups of numbers and adding without counting every dot on the die.
  • Memory
  • Candy Land

Show them 4 different objects. You can use just about anything; blocks, shells, buttons, crayons, stickers, whatever. Place them in front of the child and tell them to look at them. Hide them behind your back and take one of the 4 things away. Place them back in front of the child and have them guess what is missing.

This is great for their memory and attention to detail. As they get good at it, you can add more items to start with.
