  • www.ixl.com- This is a fee based math website for kids from preschool on up.  You can sign up for a free 2 week trial and see how you like it.  It has leveled activities for so many different math skills.  Ashlyn loves it because it times you and gives you a medal depending on how you do.  I love it because you can go to different grade levels depending on the skill.   I also have been using it with my tutoring.
  • www.dreambox.com- This is a favorite in the house right now.  It’s also a fee based math website.  We are enjoying the free trial period right now.  It tests your child in the beginning to see where they should start.  Ashlyn had no idea she was being tested because the games are so much fun!  As a former 1st grade teacher, the games on this website are (I feel) on grade level and exactly what they need to be learning.
  • www.tickettoread.com- We tried this website out and decided to go ahead and buy a year subscription.  It’s only 30.00 a year and it helps with reading.  The kindergarten level is a lot of phonics activities and then some sight word games.  You have to help find the parts to missing toys that the “zogwogs” took.  The 1st grade level and above works more on fluency and comprehension.  It reads a passage to you and then times you on reading it yourself.  As you get points you get to buy things for your clubhouse.

]]> http://www.teachingtwo.com/2009/07/24/cute-puppets/feed/ 6 Creepy, Crawly, Bugs! http://www.teachingtwo.com/2009/07/17/creepy-crawly-bugs/ http://www.teachingtwo.com/2009/07/17/creepy-crawly-bugs/#comments Fri, 17 Jul 2009 17:51:32 +0000 Anne week http://www.teachingtwo.com/2009/07/17/creepy-crawly-bugs/ This week at summer camp the theme was Creepy Crawly Bugs.  We did so many cute crafts but this one was my favorite.  Each kid got a gardening glove (pink for girls and blue for boys).   We hot glued a piece of foam shaped like a body to the top of the glove.  The kids got to pick out whatever colored wings (also made of foam) they wanted to.  Some decorated the wings with pom poms.  I cut Styrofoam balls in half and then glued googly eyes to those.  They each ended up with really cute bug puppets to take home with them.  Here are my girls’ bugs.

]]> http://www.teachingtwo.com/2009/07/17/creepy-crawly-bugs/feed/ 6 Camping Day http://www.teachingtwo.com/2009/06/04/camping-day/ http://www.teachingtwo.com/2009/06/04/camping-day/#comments Fri, 05 Jun 2009 03:08:54 +0000 Anne camping binoculars picnic rocks planned activities friday friendly http://www.teachingtwo.com/2009/06/04/camping-day/ We are going camping for the first time with the girls (and as a couple) in a week and the kids are so excited.  I thought I would have a camping day indoors first .  So today while they were resting I planned a whole day of fun activities for Friday.  I took these pictures the night before because I knew I wouldn’ t have time to blog about it tomorrow.  Below is a picture of everything I will need.  Here is what I have planned for them:

  • After breakfast they will decorate two toilet paper rolls using bug stickers, markers, stamps, etc. to make binoculars.
  • rock painting- I found 4 awesome rocks that I “borrowed” from a distant neighbor. :)
  • creating sculptures using toothpicks and mini marshmallows
  • making numbers using playdoh (not really a camping activity but I found a sheet that had snakes on it)
  • bug hunting in the backyard using their binoculars and bug jars they made at Emily’s b-day party. 
  • making their own “trail mix”- popcorn, peanuts, m&m’s, Cheerios
  • reading in their tent and sleeping bags
  • having an indoor picnic using our picnic basket
  • counting activities with fireflies that I found here. 

I will let you know how it goes and try to take pictures but I can’t promise anything.  I plan on tackling Emily’s dresser in between activities.

Ashlyn was getting kind of bored with “regular” painting so the other day we tried something a little different.  We painted a beautiful picture using straws.  It was so much fun! 

I got 3 different straws and put them in the color paint she wanted.  Then she blew through the straw and blew the paint onto the paper.  She really got into it and tried to mix the colors to make new colors.  Then we folded her paper in half and I had her press on both sides to mix the paint together even more.  It looked great when we opened it up and it was a neat beginning lesson on symmetry too. 

Here is the finished product that now hangs on our refrigerator.

This activity could be done anytime with regular stickers but I had lots of Easter stickers to use up.  My 5 year old did this as a center at school so I decided to do it with my 2 year old.  I cut a long piece of construction paper and folded it accordion style until there were 5 “pages”.  On the front I wrote Easter Counting Book and then wrote the numbers 1-5 at the bottom of each page.  She told me the numbers and put the correct amount of stickers on each page.

Resurrection Garden

This is another activity Ashlyn did at school that I thought was really neat.  The kids got to pick out a bowl and fill it with soil.  Then her teacher planted a flower and sprinkled some grass seed.  They made a cross from popsicle sticks and found a rock from outside.  Next, they placed the rock in front of a the bottom part of a plastic Easter egg representing the stone that was in front of Jesus’ tomb.  We have it on our kitchen table and the girls love taking turns trimming the grass with scissors.  I love that every-time we eat, we see the garden and can remember what Jesus did for us and why we celebrate Easter.
