• The kids painted a small cupcake liner green for the turtles shell.  Then they glued it to the cut out turtle pattern.
• They ripped green paper to look like cattails and added a small brown pom pom.

We read the book IN the Small, Small Pond and then sang the song 5 Green and Speckled frogs and I borrowed this great prop from my friend.  Thanks Riane!   The kids loved it and played with it throughout the day.

I found this great Frog grid game and the kids asked to play it over and over again.  I printed off two copies and had small frog counters.  Each student took turns rolling the die and adding that many frogs to their lily pads.   The first one to fill up their board won.

We started by hunting frogs (or toads) in our backyard.  We found two small ones that she and her sister created habitats for. They named them Weenie and Butterfoot.  Then we read the book Green Wilma by Tedd Arnold.  It is such a fun, silly book that is great for rhyming.  I told Emily we should make our own Green Wilma although after I said that I realized I was out of green paint.  So it became a color mixing project too.

• Emily mixed the colors blue and yellow.  She was so excited to watch them turn to green.

• Then she painted the back of a paper plate green.

•  She glued big white eyes and then drew the pupils, nose and mouth with black marker.

•  Finally, she curled a red piece of paper around a pen to make the tongue.

As we read it we came to a page that talked about how the sky would look if birds painted with their tail feathers.  So we decided to try and recreate that page by painting with feathers.

I had the girls water color their papers blue first.  Then they picked out what colors they wanted in their skies.  I gave them a different feather for each color, ( I’m very anal about having the colors mix) and they began creating.  They loved it and asked to do more.

We took a white piece of paper and had her use a sponge brush to paint it.  Then she used a roller to paint a red half circle on the bottom.  I cut a sponge into a rectangle to make the vase and a circle for the middle of the flowers.  Then she used the other side of the rectangle sponge to paint the petals.  We only had room for two flowers because the red half circle was too big.  I now know to encourage my kids to make it smaller.

Ashlyn was getting kind of bored with “regular” painting so the other day we tried something a little different.  We painted a beautiful picture using straws.  It was so much fun!

I got 3 different straws and put them in the color paint she wanted.  Then she blew through the straw and blew the paint onto the paper.  She really got into it and tried to mix the colors to make new colors.  Then we folded her paper in half and I had her press on both sides to mix the paint together even more.  It looked great when we opened it up and it was a neat beginning lesson on symmetry too.

Here is the finished product that now hangs on our refrigerator.

Just move the mouse around the screen to splatter the paint.  The slower you move the more paint gets applied.  If you move quickly, you’ll get a thin line of paint.  Be aware, it’s a continuous line of paint.

To change colors, just left click with the mouse.

To clear your creation, just hit the spacebar.

These are just a couple of my creations.  This is actually pretty relaxing.

They each got to pick a color to use and I put a piece of paper at the bottom of a shoe box.  Then I gave them each a golf ball and dabbed some paint on the paper.  Then I had them paint the golf ball with a little paint.  We closed the box and they took turns shaking it.  That’s it!  They loved how their pictures turned out.   You can also do this with marbles but I couldn’t find any around my house.

I let them each pick a color paint and then I gave them a toilet paper roll.  Ashlyn’s job was to make sure all the little pieces of toilet paper were off.  I had them dip it into the paint and make circles.  I also found some extra plastic Easter eggs that they painted with too.   Emily loved it and went right to work.  Her circles slowly became ovals because she was squeezing the roll a little too hard.  It looked neat though. 

Ashyln had to sit there and think about what she was going to do.  She decided to experiment which I was so excited about.  Normally Ashyln has to do things the right way and it has to be perfect.  She started with the toilet paper roll and then put the smaller egg circles in the middle.  She then put paint on the side of the egg and made “jellybean” shaped paint blobs.  They both had fun and their creations turned out great!

This is a perfect picture of why it was such a long day!  I asked her to say cheese.
