Thu, 02 Feb 2012 01:44:45 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.1.3 Transportation http://www.teachingtwo.com/2010/02/28/transportation/ http://www.teachingtwo.com/2010/02/28/transportation/#comments Sun, 28 Feb 2010 21:53:01 +0000 Anne transportation rainy starting tuesday type cold unit plan http://www.teachingtwo.com/2010/02/28/transportation/ Yesterday was a rainy, cold day so I knew we would be inside the whole day.  I usually try and plan fun things for the girls to do during these type days.  Ashlyn just finished up a transportation unit at school and Emily is starting one on Tuesday so I decided to go with that.  We read the book Away We Go! by Rebecca Kai Dotlich to start off the day.  It’s not the most exciting book but it had cute pictures to talk about.

Then we collected as many cars, trains, and princess coaches that had wheels and picked out some fun colored paints.  The girls had a blast rolling them in the paint and making tracks all over their papers.

After that we practiced making paper airplanes.  Ashlyn loved this activity and even named the ones she made.  My favorite is The Super Dee Duper 100.  I don’t have any pictures of this.  We were too busy having flying contests to see who’s could go the farthest.  After making paper airplanes we made edible ones for a snack.  All you need is a half of banana, peanut butter, a pretzel stick, and some crackers.  They turned out cute and were delicious to eat!

Our final activity was fro Emily to practice her cutting skills by cutting out “train tracks”.  She had to follow the tracks to the heart stickers and then stop.  She did a great job!

I had planned much more but Emily had a fever so I didn’t want to push it.  Here is a cute train craft we did last year during our transportation unit.  Check out more transportation activities here.

Here is a fun healthy snack idea I got out of Ashlyn’s Highlights Magazines.  Here is how, you too, can make your own edible ladybug.

  • Cut a red apple in half.
  • Have your child use a knife or spoon to put small amounts of peanut butter on the top of the apple.
  • Place raisins, chocolate chips, M&M’s, etc. on the dabs of peanut butter.
  • Then use a toothpick to attach a grape to the front of the apple for the ladybug’s head.
  • The magazine then says to use black licorice for the legs but I thought pretzel sticks could be fun too. (I didn’t have either when we made ours so we had a legless ladybug.

It was so easy to make and Ashlyn loved eating it.  This would be a great activity for playdates or your child’s preschool class.

 1. Cut 3 thick slices of banana for the body.

2.  Add a triangle piece of apple for his hat with a grape on top.

3.  For his eyes and buttons the magazine said to use mini choc. chips but we used raisins instead.  I had the girls bite them in half  so they would stick better.

4.  We then used 2 pretzel sticks for the arms and a sliver of carrot for the nose.

It was easy to make and healthy to eat!

So tonight after dinner we all made them together.  It was fun and really was simple as long as you don’t over cook the chocolate.  Here’s what you do.

  • buy white chocolate chips and melt them in the microwave.  We used about a cup of chips and heated them for a minute. 
  • dip the pretzels of any shape in the chocolate.  My girls don’t like to get messy so the pretzel sticks were best for them to use.
  • then roll the dipped pretzels in different colored sprinkles.
  • place them on wax paper and let them set for about 30 minutes.

We had fun making them and now they have a homemade snack for tomorrow.
